Stephen Carter Obituary


Of Lewiston, NY, passed away on Tuesday April 9, 2024. He was born in Olyphant, PA. on July 9, 1940, a son of the late John and Mary [Kelly] Carter.

He moved to Niagara Falls, NY with his family, in 1942.

Mr. Carter attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Bishop Duffy High School and attended evening classes at Niagara University and Niagara County Community College. After graduating from the Erie County Sheriff’s Academy, he was employed by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, retiring as a Senior Investigator after 34 years of service, serving under four Sheriffs.

Mr. Carter was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Knights of Columbus 247, Sons of the American Legion, First Friday Club, Lockport Woodworkers, Deputy Sheriff’s Association and the CSEA.

He was very proud of his Irish ancestry and citizenship, and held an Irish Passport.

Mr. Carter enjoyed traveling with his wife, camping, hunting and fishing with his sons and brothers. He also enjoyed gatherings of family and friends at their "Carter On The Lake" cottage.

Mr. Carter is  survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara [Battaglia] Carter, a son Sean R. (Maria) Carter, a daughter-in-law Nancy Castillo Carter, a granddaughter Shawna (Adrian) Stevens-John, three great grandsons Hoya’daiwat, Hogaiyo: and Joiise John, nieces Maureen Carter and Mary Elizabeth Burton.

He was the father of the late Stephen John Carter and was the brother of the late Joseph, John, Thomas, Robert, Thomas "Babe" Michaels, Mary Burton and Betty Shaffer.

His family will be present on Monday, April 22, 2024, from 9-10 AM  at St. Mary of Cataract Church, 237 4th Street, Niagara Falls, NY,  followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Jacek Mazur officiating.

Inurnment in North Ridge Cemetery, Town of Cambria.

Memorials may be made in his name to Stella Niagara Education Park, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, or The Shriners Hospital for Children.
