Nancy Ann Thorne

Nancy Thorne, teacher and life-long Niagara Falls resident, died peacefully at her home on May 10, 2019. She was 84. 

Nancy spent her career teaching first and second grades at Niagara Street Elementary School and Maple Street Elementary School. Frequently, former pupils and their families would recognize and greet her.   Nancy was always able to recall each and every one by name.

Nancy Ann Thorne was born December 1, 1934. Her father, Clifford Thomas Thorne, was a pharmacist and owner of the Delaney and Thorne Pharmacy. Her mother, Kathleen (Petty) Thorne, was a homemaker. Nancy had an older brother,  Clifford.

Nancy graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1954.  She received a Bachelor of Science from Niagara University, and in 1967, a Master of Science in Education, also from Niagara University.  She was a long-time member of St. Teresa’s Parish.   In addition to her teaching, Nancy enjoyed antiquing, travel, and membership in social  groups.

She also enjoyed visits with her nieces and nephews and their families.   Birthday parties for Nancy in Niagara Falls, were especially fun and memorable.

Nancy prided herself on keeping up with the lives of her grand nieces and nephews and eagerly anticipated the births of their children. She in turn, delighted in sharing family lore and stories of old Niagara Falls.

Nancy was preceded in death by both parents and her brother. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Thorne; three nieces, Julie (Michael Rynd) Thorne, Mary (Joshua) Silverman, and Sarah (Robert) Thorne-Locke, and a nephew, Clifford Thomas (Barbara) Thorne; eight grand nieces and nephews; and three great grand nieces.  Nancy also leaves behind her companion and caregiver, Marcy Larsen, who gave Nancy the gift of friendship and care for many years.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 5, 2019 at 11:00 AM, at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 1124 Ontario Avenue, NIAGARA FALLS, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Neurofibromatosis Network (nfnetwork.org) or  to Catholic Charities (CRS.org).
