Sister Marie Altier, OSF, (formerly Sister M. Rosita) born in Corning, OH, on December 1, 1924, died on December 17, 2019 at the Stella Niagara Health Center, Stella Niagara, New York. She was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary (Marino) Altier.
Sister Marie entered the Sisters of St. Francis on September 1, 1945 and was professed August 18, 1947. Sister Marie's principal ministry was Teaching, She received her B.S. degree from Rosary Hill (Daemen) College in Buffalo, New York, in 1963; Sister Marie taught at St. Joachim, St. Benedict and St. Lawrence Schools in Buffalo, NY; St. Michael School, Warsaw; St. Peter School Lewiston; Mt. Carmel School, Silver Creek; Holy Trinity School, Dunkirk; Stella Niagara School; St. Bernadette School, Lancaster, OH; St. Agnes School, Atlantic Highlands, NJ; and St. Mary School, New Monmouth, NJ; Sacred Heart School, Charleston, W.VA; St. Anthony School, Greenville, SC; and St. Francis International School in Roma, Italy.
In 1985, Sister Marie moved to Stella Niagara where she assisted in our Health Center. She became Postmistress at Stella Niagara in 1990. From 1990-2005, she Directed our Refugee Program. After retiring, she volunteered with the Women's Respite Program and organized and ran “Sister Marie's Boutique” of clothing and accessories for Respite participants.
Sister Marie moved to the Stella Niagara Health Center in 2014.
Sister Marie was one of eleven children. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by nine siblings. She is survived by her brother, Nicholas and many nieces and nephews, as well as her Sisters in the Stella Niagara Community.
Wake Thursday, December 19 from 2-5PM with a prayer service at 4:30 PM and Mass of Christian Burial in the Sister's Chapel at 5 PM.
