Arthur M. Kelly, a long time resident of Lewiston, NY, died peacefully at home at the age of 91 on June 2, 2022. Arthur was born in Tarrytown, NY, to the late Edward I. and Bessie M. [Bannon] Kelly on June 21, 1930.
He grew up in Yonkers, NY during the Great Depression, attended high school and then studied at Marist Seminary School. His first job was as a bicycle messenger for the Squibb Corporation in New York City.
Art enrolled at Manhattan College in 1949. He left school to enlist in the Air Force, where he went through pilot training and served honorably from June, 1951 to June, 1955. After his discharge, he went back to school at Manhattan and graduated with a degree in Engineering in September, 1957. He earned his P.E. License in May, 1967.
He met the love of his life at first sight in July of 1955, Ann B. Thomey of White Plains, NY. They married on July 26, 1958 and lived in Tarrytown, NY. After seeing the area while working on a project for the railroad they decided to relocate to Lewiston in 1961. They moved to their beloved Oxbow Lane shortly thereafter, raised their family and remained there to the end of life.
Art was a member of Saint Peter’s Church in Lewiston. He coached and refereed basketball games in the inter-church league for many years.
He worked late into his 80’s as a Structural Engineer with several firms during his long career including, Chas H. Sells Inc., Rupley Bahler Blake, Hibbard Engineers and with his long-time friends and colleagues at Lauer-Manguso.
Later in life, he rekindled his love of flying and trained to become an Ultralight Pilot. He owned an ultralight and flew out of Gaines Valley Aviation in Albion, NY.
Arthur is survived by his children John (Tammy) Kelly, Kathleen (Thomas, Sr.) Maxian, Eileen (Jean) Kelly; granddaughter Sara Kelly. Brother-in-law Michael (Joyce) Thomey of Framingham, MA and sister-in-law Jane (Thomey) Moore of Petaluma, CA.
Arthur is predeceased by his wife Ann B. and brothers Raymond, John and Edward.
His family will be present on Sunday from 4-7 PM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 901 Cayuga Street, Lewiston, NY, where funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:30 AM, followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Peter's Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, with the Rev. Cole Webster officiating.
Memorials may be made in his name to the Lewiston Fire Company #1.
Interment with Military Honors in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
