Edwin (Ed) Francis Funk of Youngstown, NY passed away Dec. 4, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was 84. On Dec. 1, he was struck by a car while crossing Cayuga Street in Lewiston to pick out a family Christmas tree.
Ed was a cherished husband, father, grandfather and friend to so many, young and old. Ed was born December 11, 1940, in North Tonawanda, NY to Anne and Francis Funk. His early years in Western New York shaped his character — resourceful, curious, and always ready to fix or build anything.
Ed pursued his education with a love for learning, studying history at SUNY Fredonia and later design at Buffalo State. He considered a law degree in preparation for involvement entering politics, a passion of his. He dedicated his professional life to skilled trades as a carpenter and millwright with Local 280 where he was respected for his knowledge and commitment to perfection. As a proud union advocate, Ed stood firmly for fairness and solidarity throughout his career.
Ed was always surrounded by family. He shared life with his soulmate of 45 years, Lynn Schiro Funk, and was a loving father to Laraine Anne Funk, Roger Paul Gutierrez, and Alyssa Anne Funk. He took immense pride in being a grandfather to Paulie Gutierrez, and Francis
and Evelynn Crane, who brought him joy, laughter and “headaches”. Ed was also deeply loved by many friends who knew him as a lifelong
craftsman—inquisitive, lovable, and endlessly interesting.
Ed had an outsized presence in any room he entered—with humor and authenticity. His craftsman’s skills contributed to the building of the
Niagara Power Project, the Niagara Turtle building, and the homes of many friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn; his children, Laraine, Roger (Tracy) and Alyssa (Will Crane); his grandchildren, Paulie, Francis and Evelynn; his nephews,
Richard (Susan Holland) McGinis, Kenneth (Karen) McGinis and niece Charlotte; his sister-in-law, Paula Schiro. He was predeceased by his parents, Anne and Francis, and his sibling, Patricia (Richard) McGinis.
His funeral service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church 110 Chestnut St, Youngstown, NY 14174 on Saturday, Dec. 13th, at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 166, Youngstown, NY, 14174 or Heart, Love & Soul, 939 Ontario, Ave., Niagara Falls, NY, 14305, both organizations meaningful to Edwin and his family.
