FLORENCE C. LOUGHRAN
Florence C. (Smith) Loughran passed away on May 25, 2023 at Niagara Hospice House after a brief illness. Florence was born on October 4, 1923, to the late Lester and Florence Smith in Philadelphia, PA.
After graduating from the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur high school for girls in Radnor, PA, she worked as a secretary in Center City Philadelphia until she married Joseph F. Loughran, her companion and spouse until his death in 1996. Florence and Joseph married on December 21, 1942, during WWII in Amarillo, TX, where Joseph was a flight instructor. Their wedding took place at the post chapel, where Joseph was stationed.
Florence and Joseph have seventy-one direct descendants. They were parents to eight children, Gary (deceased) (Sue) Loughran, Virginia (Warren) Payne, Fr. Jack Loughran, OSFS, Joseph (Deborah) Loughran, Mary Ann (James) Frick, Kevin (Michelle - deceased) Loughran, Thomas (Darcy) Loughran, and Martin (Margaret) Loughran. They have 23 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
Florence was happiest surrounded by her family at holidays, Sunday brunches, and any occasion when visits occurred. She and her husband also loved to travel after Joseph's retirement and together they visited all 48 of the contiguous lower states, Alaska, and many provinces in Canada in their motor home.
Florence was recognized by many as a very sweet person, always welcoming the stranger and showing interest in others. She was a devout Roman Catholic and with Joseph, raised their children in the faith they shared.
Florence will be missed by many, especially her family members for whom she was the rock that centered, steadied and brought them together as a family.
