Of the Town of Cambria, NY, passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at Niagara Hospice House. She was born in New York City, NY, on December 14, 1944, a daughter of the late William T. and Helen C. [Redmond] Power.
Her family moved to Angelica, NY, where she had lived for over five years which had held a special place in her heart, before moving to Olean.
After graduating from St. Bonaventure in 1967, she moved to Niagara Falls, where she was employed with Catholic Charities from 1968 until 1970. Mrs. McElwain later became a medical social worker at DeGraff Memorial Hospital from 1970 until 1975 before becoming a Montessori teacher at Stella Niagara Educational Park for over 20 years, before retiring in 2002.
She was proud of her Irish Heritage and volunteered with the Sanborn Library.
Mrs. McElwain enjoyed reading, genealogy and traveling to Hawaii and Ireland.
She was the wife of the late James A. McElwain, who passed away in June of 1990.
Mrs. McElwain is survived by her son Bryan K. McElwain, grand daughter Amelya McElwain, her brother Tom (Mary Ann) Power, a brother- in-law Carl (Sharon) McElwain, also many nieces and nephews.
Her family will be present on Thursday from 4-8 PM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 5893 Hoover Road, SANBORN, NY. Everyone is invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, 4671 Townline Road, Ransomville, NY.
Memorials may be made in her name to Niagara Hospice or to the Niagara County SPCA.
Interment at Niagara Falls Memorial Park Lewiston, NY.
