J. Robert Oliver Obituary

J. Robert Oliver 96, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024, in the  Schoellkopf Health Center. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY,  on July 28, 1927,  son of the late James R. and Florence C. (Fell) Oliver.

Mr. Oliver was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and Niagara University. He received his Masters in Social Work from the University of Buffalo.

He served in the US Army, with occupational forces in Japan.

Mr. Oliver was a supervisor in both the Niagara County Probation and Mental Health Departments. He became the regional director for the Berkshire Youth Services and served as Director of Professional Services at Wyndham Lawn Home and retired from Longview Niagara, as Associate Executive Director.

He was also active in the family insurance business for many years.

Mr. Oliver was a team leader and peer reviewer for the Council on Accreditation and traveled throughout the country and Canada, extensively doing site visits at social and behavioral health agencies seeking accreditation. He was an adjunct professor with the University of Buffalo School of Social Welfare and taught evenings at ECCC and NCCC.

Mr. Oliver was an usher at the former St. Teresa's Church for over 25 years.

He actively volunteered with Niagara Hospice, Meals on Wheels and as an Express Care driver with Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for ten years. He was also a board member of the Wyndlawn Lawn, Niagara Hospice and the Medical Reserve Corps.

Mr. Oliver was a railroad historian and former board member of the Niagara Frontier Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society. He recorded over 150 thousand miles of rail travel in the United States, Canada, Japan and Europe.

Mr. Oliver was the husband of 68 years to the late of Ann M. [Tierney] Oliver, who passed away in May of 2020.

He is survived by his  children John Oliver, Catherine (Thomas) Hyland and Mary Ann Oliver, four grandchildren Michael Oliver, Dana Krishland, Megan Bova and Laura Hyland  and seven great grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Oliver was  the brother of the late Mary Ann Peel.

His family will be present on Friday, May 24, 2024 from 3-7 PM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 901 Cayuga Street, LEWISTON, NY.

Everyone is invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday May 25, 2024 at 10:00 AM at St. Raphael Parish with Reverand Luke P. Ubeler II,  3840 Macklem Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY.

Memorials may be made to Heart, Love & Soul, 939 Ontario Ave., Niagara Falls, NY  14305

Interment with Military Honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
