James Schiffert Obituary

James J. Schiffert

Of the Tuscarora Nation, passed away on  Friday, April 21, 2023,  at his home under the care of his family and Niagara Hospice.  He was born in Lockport, NY,  on March 21, 1933, a son of the late Cornelius and Irene [Keller] Schiffert.

Mr. Schiffert was a graduate of DeSales High School and served with the US Army, during the Korean War.

He was a firefighter with the City of Lockport for 31 years before retiring in 1987.

Mr. Schiffert was a homesteader and farmer. He loved gardening with his Farmall Cub tractors. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed woodworking.

His children reminisce how Mr. Schiffert was often heard saying “A blindman would love to see that”  or “We're not building a Swiss watch” when plans were being over complicated.

Mr. Schiffert will be remembered by always looking on the bright side of things regardless of life's trials, he was indefatigable.  He also never hesitated to help his children whether to solve a problem,  or to build something etc.  He was generous with his children and believed in the importance of a  man's integrity and principles.  They always enjoyed his sense of humor that was evident in his stories and jokes.

Mr. Schiffert  was the husband of 46 years to the late Ann Ruth [Mt. Pleasant] Schiffert, who passed away in April of 2009.

He is survived by his children Vince (Leslie), Peter (Michele), Wayne (Mary), Edward (Patricia), Susan  and Beverly Schiffert, nine grandchildren Christian, Ethan, Sarah, Constance, Hamilton, Paige, Sebastian, Lydia and Aaron, also many nieces and nephews.
