Myrna Young Obituary

Of Lewiston, NY passed away on May 23, 2024. She was born in San Diego, California on February 8, 1944. the daughter of the late Doyle and Floy [McGee] Young.

Myrna lived her life to the fullest and lived it her way!  She was a gifted high school English teacher, inspiring young minds with her love of books and language. She proudly served as a volunteer firefighter, being the first woman in her county to drive the big red fire truck.

She loved her trips to Vegas with her dear friend Merble to play blackjack & Texas Hold'em especially during rodeo week... she loved those cowboys!

Myrna's most profound impact came through her work in the non-profit sector.  In the 1980s, she took the helm of a struggling non-profit in upstate New York. Through her tireless efforts and strategic vision, she transformed it into a multi-million dollar program with multiple locations, serving over 70,000 women in need.

The Every Woman Opportunity Center, under Myrna's leadership, became a beacon of hope, offering educational advancement, workforce placement, and a comprehensive support network for single mothers seeking to build brighter futures for themselves and their families across the state of New York.  Myrna received countless awards including the Governor's Award for Women of Distinction which was presented  to Myrna in 1994 by then Governor Mario Cuomo.

Myrna's legacy extends beyond her own work.  As a beloved aunt to RED Arena's founders, Jenny and Dave Young, she generously shared her wealth of experience and knowledge. She played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for RED, literally step-by-step, guiding its path towards becoming the thriving program it is today.

One of Myrna's greatest joys was attending the annual RED Arena Round-Up. Seeing the smiling faces of the participants and their families filled her heart. Her invaluable guidance not only brought RED into existence, but also ensured its sustainability and lasting impact.

Myrna, your fire continues to burn brightly within us. We will forever cherish your memory and carry your spirit forward in the work we do at RED.

Myrna is survived by her brother Doyle L. Young, nephew David D. Young and niece Leah M. Young.
