Peggy Salada Obituary

Peggy Salada, 95 of Lewiston, passed away peacefully of natural causes while at home ,surrounded by her family.

Peggy was a loving wife to Lawrence E. Salada, mother of eight children, grandmother of sixteen and great-grandmother. She was also a friend, a nurse and a volunteer.

Peggy grew up in the north end of Niagara Falls with her parents Margeurite (Barrett) and Laurence Benns. She attended Sacred Heart and St Mary’s schools.

She faced a life decision of joining the religious order as a nun or becoming a nurse. She went on to receive her nursing degree from Mercy School of Nursing and spent more than fifty years caring for others at Kenmore Mercy and St. Mary’s hospitals as well as different doctors, most notably with Dr. McMahon.

She married the love of her life Lawrence (Larry) E. Salada in 1952. They moved to Kenmore and back to Niagara Falls before settling in Lewiston in 1964. They were happily married for 40 years until his passing in 1992.

Peggy had a faithful devotion to Jesus and The Blessed Mother. Always youthful, fashionable and dressed to the nines. She had a vibrant personality, quick-witted sense of humor, a heart of gold and a remarkable gift of gab. She enjoyed Tin Pan Fridays and dinner and drinks with family and friends. She loved to sing and was a member of the Lewiston Larks. A voracious reader, Peggy always had a book with her wherever she went. She had a great dedication to the Lewiston Library, which she called her second home. She was a life-long volunteer with many organizations and events. She was quite proud of her involvement in relocating St. Mary’s Hospital to its present location from 6th St. She was also involved with The Lewiston Dog Park, LDOGS and Lewiston Historical Society.

She was a long-time member and officer with The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, past president of The St. Francis Guild, and former president of the Friends of The Lewiston Public Library. She was honored to receive the 2008 Town of Lewiston Citizen of  the Year Award and The 2023 Mamie Simonson Lewiston Library Volunteer of the Year Award.

Peggy was predeceased by her son Michael, her husband Lawrence, great-granddaughter baby Hope and her son-in-law Mike (Guido) Carosella.

She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her children, Jeanne (Bill) Conroy, Ann Louise Carosella, Thomas Salada,  John (Denise) Salada  , Mary Ruth (Ken) Brown, Kathleen Stack, Christopher (Amy) Salada; her grandchildren Michael (Brittney) Carroll, Meghann (Tim) Roehl, Caitlin (Brian) McNulty, Johnny, Joshua, Amber, Justin, Mia Salada, Erin (Stephen) DeRosa, Daniel (Ana) Brown,  Emily Brown, Bridget Salada, Lauren Stack, Mari Salada, Kyle Nablo, and her many great-grandchildren.

The Salada family would like to give special thanks to Bill Conroy for his Eucharistic Ministry, Liliana Borzillieri for her compassion and loving friendship, and for the wonderful care provided by Hospice.

As in books and life, they both must come to an end, but hopefully they've left a heartfelt and memorable impression.
