Rev. Calvin Wesley Babcock, God's good and faithful servant, died January 22, 2020, at home under the care of his family. He was called to the glory of his Lord after his battle with cancer. Born in Elmira, NY on March 2, 1938, the son of Rev. John Wesley and Bernice [Fleming] Babcock.
He graduated from East Aurora High School and Baldwin-Wallace College where he met and later married Janet Turner on June 18, 1960. After serving 2 years in the US Army in Syracuse, NY, he went to Boston University School of Theology, receiving his Master of Divinity. While attending BU, he pastored a church in North Truro, Cape Cod, MA. Ordained a United Methodist Clergy, he pastored churches in Batavia, Niagara Falls, Middleport and Cambria. He also served as a Community Minister for the Buffalo District as well as Chaplain for the LaSalle Yacht Club. 'The Rev' was called to be the Executive Director of Community Mission, Inc. in 1976 where he ministered in countless ways for 20 years. Upon retirement, Cal worked to improve '"the looks" of Niagara Falls - some through the Niagara Beautification Commission projects, keeping creeks and rivers clear, mowing "'uncared for" properties, weeding, planting, watering N.F. entrances, snow blowing neighborhoods and more.
Family brought him much pride and joy; son Grant (Susan) Babcock of Niagara Falls, daughter Julie (John) DeRubes of San Diego and daughter Carla Mackenna of Niagara Falls. Grandchildren Ryan & Evan Babcock; Frank, Brian & Sean DeRubes; Kalie, Megan & Allison Mackenna all received many notes accompanied with cut-out articles from Papa over the years. Dog, Heidi, was steadfast companion to the end.
A Celebration of life will take place on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 11:30 AM at St. James UMC, 4661 Porter Rd, Niagara Falls, NY. Family will be present at St. James immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Community Missions of Niagara Frontier, Inc.; St. James UMC; Niagara Beautification Commission; Niagara Hospice;or Roswell Park.
