Robert F. Banas, Sr., of Sanborn, NY, passed away on August 24, 2021. He was born in Buffalo, NY on January 7, 1938, son of the late Francis and Salomea “Sally” [Grabowska] Banas.
Bob grew up in Black Rock and attended Burgard Vocational High School. He joined the US Navy and was assigned to the VP 26 Squadron stationed in Brunswick, Maine as an Aviation Structural Mechanic. After returning home from the service, he began his first job at Harold’s Auto Shop where he learned to make convertible tops. His skills led to a long career in fabrication and air supported structures at Birdair, Inc., where he developed buildings around the globe for over 20 years, before starting Tensar Structures with his colleagues.
Despite having a heavy travel schedule, a sports enthusiast, he found time to coach the local boy’s baseball team. Once retired, Bob enjoyed playing golf at Shawnee Country Club with his children and friends. He was a devout Bills and Notre Dame football fan. With an affinity for aircrafts, he was happy to see the Blue Angels fly one more time with his children this past Father's Day.
Bob was the husband of 59 years, to the late Barbara Ann [Coleman] Banas, who passed away on July 4th of 2017.
He was the father of Robert F. Banas, Jr., Graceanne (Mark) Jordan and the late Wendy Banas, grandfather of Theresa, Christopher and Courtney Campbell and Brandon Barry, great-grandfather of Olivia McKenzie, Carter Campbell, Connor Campbell and Aedan Rynkowski and brother of Amy Dosiak and the late Dolores Feldman. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service with Military Honors will be held at the wishes of his family.
