The family of Dr. Robert L. Bull, Jr. is sad to share the news of his passing, after a valiant battle with Cancer, on May 23, 2026.
Dr. Bull, “Rob”, “Bob” or “Robbie” to those who knew him best, will be long remembered for his heartfelt and service-oriented practice of medicine. His notable career was further emphasized by his care and dedication to his patients both in his local community, and around the world. Dr. Bull truly lived his vocation, twenty-four hours a day. He was the strongest of advocates for getting his patients the care (often life-saving) they needed, and would sit with Hospice patients through the middle of the night, so they wouldn’t be alone. It was thus an honor for family and friends to do the same for him.
Born on May 25, 1955 to parents from the “greatest generation”, Robert Sr. and Marian Bull, Dr. Bull grew up in Eden, New York.
He received undergraduate degrees at the SUNY schools of Brockport and the Upstate Medical Center. He received his medical degree from the Universidad Central del Este, in the Dominican Republic in 1981. He earned Fellowship in the American Academy of Family Practice in 2004.
Dr. Bull’s medical leadership positions were numerous, including serving as a Contract Physician, Board of Trustees Member, Chief of Family Medicine, and ultimately President of Medical Staff at Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital Center.
Besides having a large Family Practice, Dr Bull worked in Emergency Medicine as well as Corporate Health at many area plants. He generously cared for religious communities and many clergy in the Diocese of Buffalo. His deep faith led him to work long hours to care for others, often encouraging the intercession of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and St Padre Pio.
Dr. Bull was a member of national and local medical organizations and received numerous awards and recognition for his care and dedication to his patients and to those in need. Dr. Bull was very proud of his medical service to struggling global communities. He felt blessed to be one of the founding “Angels” of the mission established by the Franciscan Sisters of Stella Niagara in Chiapas, Mexico. Over the course of decades, he assisted in the blossoming of this mission to include physicians from across the country, dentistry and the eventual building of a Health Clinic. Thousands of poverty-stricken indigenous peoples are now treated annually as a result. It truly was his Magnum Opus.
After retiring from his medical practice, Dr. Bull continued in volunteer service at University Presbyterian FeedMore of WNY food bank.
Outside of his busy medical practice, Dr. Bull enjoyed art, gardening, much international travel, caring for a community cat and babysitting his siblings’ dogs when needed, and was an accomplished classical pianist. He was a true giant of men and will be missed by many—locally, nationally, and internationally.
Dr. Bull is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Marian Bull. He is survived by his partner for over forty years, Lonnie Arnold, siblings Kathleen Lell (late Dennis), Jocelyn Tragarz (late James), Barbara Bull (Marsha Shuler), Douglas Bull (Darlene), and Marlene Lamparelli (James), as well as many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and dear friends.
