Sister Marina Matracia, OSF passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, in the Stella Niagara Health Center, Stella Niagara, NY. She was born Anna Matracia in Buffalo, NY, on December 12, 1920, the daughter of the late Anthony and Catherine (Capone) Matracia.
Sister Marina entered the Sisters of St. Francis September 7, 1929 and was professed August 18, 1941. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Mt. St. Joseph Teacher's College, Buffalo, NY in 1948.
Sister Marina's principal ministries included Teaching and Pastoral Care. She taught at St. Ann School and St. Benedict School, Buffalo, NY; Our Lady of Lebanon School, Niagara Falls, NY; St. Peter School, Lewiston, NY; St. John School and St. Anthony School, Columbus, Ohio; St. Mary School, New Monmouth and Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Highlands, NJ; Sacred Heart School and St. Anthony School, Charleston, WV.
Sister Marina was Parish Minister to the Elderly at St. Mary Parish, New Monmouth, NJ then became a librarian and Kindergarten aide at Our Lady of Pompeii School, Lancaster, NY. Sister Marina was also a cook at St. Benedict Convent and served in the dining room at Daemen College, Buffalo, NY.
After retiring in 2005, Sister Marina remained at San Damiano Convent , Amherst, NY. At the age of 93, she was still volunteering at the Heart, Love and Soul in Niagara Falls, NY. She moved to Stella Niagara and became a resident of the Health Center in 2013.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Anna (Vincent) Matracia, many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as her Sisters in the Stella Niagara Community. Sister Marina was the sister of the late Clara (Theodore) Tornesella, Josephine (Joseph) Barbuto, Vincent (Anna) Matracia, Myron (Angeline) Matracia and Marie (John) Duggan.
Visitation will be on Friday at Stella Niagara, 4421 Lower River Road, from 4-7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sister's Chapel on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
