Sister Mary Diehl, OSF Obituary

Sister Mary Diehl, OSF (formerly Sister Jeanine) was born September 6, 1933 in Columbus, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Virginia (Price) Diehl. Sister Mary died on October 26, 2021 at the Stella Niagara Health Center, at the age of 88.


Sister Mary entered the Sisters of St. Francis at Stella Niagara September 7, 1951 and was professed August 18, 1954. She received her Bachelor's degree from Rosary Hill (now Damen) College, Buffalo, NY, in 1969, and was certified by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) Board in 1984. 


Sister Mary's ministry was education and Pastoral Care. She first taught at Our Lady of Lebanon School, Niagara Falls, NY (1954-1957). From 1957-1963, she served as House Mother at St. Vincent Orphanage, Columbus, OH. Then she returned to teaching: at St. Anthony School, Charleston, WVa (1963); St. John School, Columbus, OH (1963-1965); Sacred Heart School, Columbus, OH (1965-1969); and Our Lady of the Rosary School, Greenville, SC (1969-1972). From 1972-1975, Sister Mary served as a Nurses' Aide at St. Ann's Hospital, Columbus, OH. In 1975, she began Pastoral Ministry, serving at St. Augustine Parish (1975-1977); and Holy Rosary Parish (1977-1980) in Columbus, OH.

She returned to Pastoral Care at St. Ann Hospital, Columbus, OH (1980-1991). Then Sister Mary moved to Central College Presbyterian Church, Westerville, OH, where she served as Pastoral Associate (1991-2007).


In 2007, Sister Mary began volunteering at Mt. Carmel/St. Ann's Hospital as a Eucharistic Minister, while also covering for vacations, and call-offs and other spiritual care needs. Sister Mary retired at St. Leo Convent, Columbus, OH in 2010 while still continuing to volunteer at Mt. Carmel/St. Ann's Hospital. She moved to Stella Niagara Health Center in 2013.
 

Sister Mary is survived by her sister-in-law, Margaret Diehl, nieces and nephews: Thomas, Jerry, Anne, Peggy and Mary as well as her Sisters in the Stella Niagara Community. Besides her parents, Sister Mary was predeceased by her brother William Diehl.
