MARY F. EMES
Mary F. Emes, a prominent figure skating instructor in the New York State and Ontario region, passed on Saturday, February 25, 2023, from this life at Niagara Hospice in Lockport, NY. She was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on July 31, 1952, a daughter of the late Harry and Helen Elizabeth “Betty” [Long] Emes.
Mary was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls and a graduate of Stella Niagara. She went on to receive her BA in Communications and Psychology from SUNY College at Plattsburgh where she later became a continuing education and college instructor.
Mary was a prominent, beloved, and dedicated private and group skating instructor with the Skating Club of Western New York, Skate Great, Thomas Creek Figure Skating Club, Genesee Figure Skating Club, Skating Club of Lake Placid, Olympic Regional Development Authority, and a longtime coach of The Litz Team.
She was also an accomplished skater herself, earning her Canadian Figure Skating Association (CFSA) Gold Medal in Ice Dance, as well as completing the CFSA 7th level of Figure and Freestyle testing. She served as a non-qualifying technical specialist for the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) where she volunteered her time judging local skating competitions.
Mary devoted her life to the sport of figure skating, educating and mentoring thousands of students for over 50 years, forever changing the lives of everyone she touched with her wisdom, charisma, humor, and passion.
Mary is survived by her brother, Christopher Emes; nephews, Ian Emes and Todd Snyder; several cousins; her cat companion, Savannah; her dogs, Lucy, Ricky, Athena, and Cronus; and her endless family of friends, colleagues, students, and parents.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Kristen Emes and Barbara (late Edward) Snyder; her niece, Stacey Snyder; and her dogs, Baxter and Valentine.
Services will be announced at a later date.
