This news makes me extremely sad. I've been meaning to stop by to see him when I come back and visit the area, but never made it. Regretful now... Dale was my Boy scout leader for 6 years. He took me into his newly formed troop when I was under the boy scout age. I loved his engaging personality and energy. He taught me so much, I can't tell you. My love of nature, outdoor activities, camping and canoeing all came from Dale. Growing up in Love canal, I could have easily ended up on the wrong side of good behavior. Dale taught me how to be a respectful young man. He taught me to respect and appreciate nature. He wasn't one of these Boy scout leaders that pushed his boys to earn merit badges. The only ones he insisted on were First Aid and Knot tying. He was more about taking serious adventure style camping trips. The trips he led to Algonquin. Mt Morris and West Virginia were hard core. He worked us very, very hard. We learned to depend on each other and believe in ourselves. I can't imagine a boy scout leader taking 12 young teenage boys into the middle of nowhere for survival style 10 day canoeing trips today. We covered some ground. We all learned his camping, caving, repelling, and survival skills. The winter camping we did was serious. No tailgate camping with him. We hiked in. The Klondike Derby wins we earned at Stone Haven with his wooden dog sled were so fun. I still remember waxing the sled rails. So many great stories and memories. He was my first role model and mentor and has helped shape me into the man I've become today. I now live in Boulder Colorado and embrace the outdoors all because of him. Godspeed Dale!
