Message from Shirley \"Fitzpatrick\" Muraca

My sympathy to the family of Marie Riley. I became very fond of Marie through my father Jim Fitzpatrick. He would share stories of his friendship with Marie and others while attending St. Mary\'s High School. His memories of Marie were very warm. His recollections of their high school times with mutual friends always included Marie as a main contributor to the warmth they all shared. My thoughts and prayers are with all her love ones.

Dr. Riley was a fine instructor of mine at UNC-G from 1972-74 and I value the time I had to learn from her. I am now an LPGA professional and I know she would be so proud!!! She was a treasure and will be missed. My sincere apologies to her family.

Last November, when Tiger Woods was beaten with his golf club by his wife, Aunt Marie noted, \"That girl has a good swing, she ought to take it up. Such a comment was typical our Aunt with her quick wit. With humor was sometimes dry, you had to listen for it. When you did, laughter and memories were usually brought to the occasion. She loved hot dogs and homemade ice cream from Yum-Yums in Greensboro. This is a restaurant that was down home and uncomplicated, much the way our Aunt ran her life. Those that were close know about the greeting cards for Birthdays and St. Patrick’s Day. Twenty-Dollars was enclosed in a card for my 21st Birthday. The next year, One Dollar was enclosed with the standard comment, “and one makes Twenty-Two”. When I got the card, I usually would call or comment the next time we had the opportunity to visit that she was short Twenty-One...Twenty-Two and so on… It was a nice tradition that was continued until recently. I guess Marie had a good excuse for not sending the card this year; She died on my birthday. These are, but just a few thoughts that I have about my Aunt. We will miss her, and I take comfort in the fact that she made a good deposit on the grand plan. I hope she met St. Peter at the Gate a half hour before the Devil knew she was dead.

Dr. Riley probably was not aware of the impact she had on so many of us she taught and coached on the field hockey teams at UNC-G. I will always remember her patience and encouragement. SHE MADE A DIFFERENCE. Class of 1970
